Irritable Bowel Syndrome Info
“The tuba is certainly the most intestinal of instruments, the very lower bowel of music.”
Peter De Vries
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS, alternatively referred to as a “spastic colon” disease) is an illness characterised by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and inconsistent of bowel habits. As a functional bowel disorder, IBS is strongly linked to overactive nervous system and adrenals in response to ongoing stress.
Diarrhoea and/or constipation usually alternate in IBS. Several different health conditions may present themselves as IBS, including coeliac disease, fructose mal-absorption, mild infections, parasitic infections, several inflammatory bowel diseases, bile acid mal-absorption, functional chronic constipation, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and chronic functional abdominal pain.
The primary symptoms of IBS are abdominal pain and discomfort together with frequent diarrhoea or constipation and a change in bowel habits. There may also be urgency for bowel movements, a feeling of incomplete evacuation, bloating, or abdominal distension.
In some cases, the symptoms are relieved by bowel movements. People with IBS, more commonly than others, have gastro-oesophageal reflux, symptoms relating to the genitourinary system, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, backache and psychiatric symptoms such as depression and anxiety.
Treatments for IBS aim to both relieve symptoms and resolve the underlying stressors. Identifying food allergies or intolerances, dietary changes, restoring healthy body biochemistry, therapy or counselling for emotional and psychological issues and flower essence remedies are all good options to include in a treatment plan. The nervous system, adrenals, liver and gastrointestinal tract all need medicinal herbs, supportive minerals and other nutrients to help relax and balance this hypersensitive system. There are natural health remedies which may help alleviate the symptoms of IBS. Most of these are based on balancing the system with herbs, nutrients and minerals that may be lacking.
