Chromium Info
Chromium is an essential trace mineral important for maintaining blood sugar levels within the normal range. It is a central component of the glucose tolerance factor (GTF) molecule, a hormone-like compound that enhances insulin activity in moving glucose from the blood into cells. Because tissue sensitivity to insulin is increased, less insulin is needed, leading to reduced fat deposits.
Chromium is also needed for several liver functions including fatty acid, lecithin, cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism.
Vitamin C and niacin (vitamin B3) both increase dietary chromium absorption, which is stored in the liver, spleen, soft tissue and bones of the body. Unfortunately, modern food processing methods destroy much of the chromium content of food. The typical modern diet, high in refined foods with added sugar, creates a chromium deficiency.
Chromium Benefits
Chromium supplements may benefit people who consume a high sugar diet, which leads to increased urinary excretion of chromium. Other factors that can reduce chromium stores are infection, strong exercise, stress, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Specific benefits of chromium include maintaining balanced blood sugar levels, controlling glucose and fatty acid metabolism, improving energy, managing food cravings and reducing the need for insulin (leading to improved arterial health).
People with diabetes types I and II, hypoglycaemia, sugar cravings, obesity, low energy or high cholesterol may benefit from taking a chromium supplement.
