Hoodia gordonii is one of a group of succulent plants native to the semi-desert areas of southern Africa. This particular variety of hoodia was traditionally used for thousands of years by San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert. They ate the bitter tasting fleshy part of the stem to suppress their appetite and thirst through the long hunting trips that were part of their nomadic lifestyle.
